Rest In Peace Orland Dixie. An obituary

For the last nearly 13 years I have had to compete with another woman for Sam's attention but this time last week we had to say a sad farewell to our beautiful chocolate friend"

An Obituary:

Known to the Kennel Club as Orlando Dixie you came to us as an 8 week old puppy and have added much sparkle, mud and barks to our lives. Our chocolate drop, with otter feet and the most beautiful nature has been set free to chase rabbits in the sky.

Bentley you were the most simply amazing specimen of a Labrador ever.  You were living proof that chocolate Labradors didn't have to be crazy but could be calm, loving and above all so incredibly intelligent. You graced our wedding with your licks, greeted each of our four babies with a sniff, were always keen to collect pigeons and would sit the length of a football pitch when told. Camping trips were so easy with you by our side, walks were made more enjoyable and cuddles were immeasurable.  You aged gracefully and in the latter year enjoyed nothing more than a short stroll and early tea and a bed in-front of the fire!

We are proud of what you were - you have left paw prints on our hearts and an amazing legacy behind.  So many of our beautiful friends have their best friends because of you. You always were a legend and your nature will live on through all of your four legged pups.

Bentley, life without you will seem very different and we miss you so much already xxxx

Our ever-growing family!

So many of you know how much I love my dogs...each and everyone of them!! So I thought I should introduce them properly!!

It all started with our little cairn terrier Harley 14 years ago. She brought much happiness, love and fresh air! Next came Bentley our Chocolate labrador...a shy little thing so placid for a chocolate Labrador so we decided she would be the perfect mummy.

And so it began and Cooper ( Black), Beamer (Fox Red) and Ludo all came along from a variety of litters.

5 beautiful four legged friend. Friends for life. Each bringing much happiness and love to our busy home. Each adding a little stamp on the world with their own little brood...

Two of whom have recently produced 18 little puddings, all here to celebrate Christmas with us. Who needs gifts on Christmas day when you have 18 beautiful labradors to play with!!

To Inspire Is To...

I've been working on my marketing this morning and trying to set up my handmade on amazon profile and it set me off on a tangent when it asked “what inspires you?”. I was left wondering if my answer was supposed to be relevant and related to From The Oak tree or if it meant generally.

And so, I started to day dream...or procastinate ( whatever one would like to label it.)

I find inspiration in the everyday. What we each experience in our everyday lives makes us who we are and that is amazing. I am fascinated by relationships of all types –happy ones, complicated ones, unusual ones.  I enjoy the challenge of communicating and love making new relationships.  Each of these relationships inspires me to be...well me. The BEST me possible.

I often leave a conversation and analyse it (one of my mahoosive down falls and something I spend far too much time worrying about) but in finding a positive, I feel that upon reflection I am helped and inspired to be kinder, more hardworking and a more thoughtful person. I do in turn hope that sometimes I have the opportunity to inspire friends and people I meet- not in order to improve them but to encourage them to chase their dreams as well.

Much of my From the Oak Tree inspiration not only comes from those who I already know but those I would love to get to know either for the long haul or just in that instance whilst we work together to create that special and most perfect oak gift.

It would be remiss of me to conclude this little blog without mentioning the two biggest relationships I have that inspire me...

Sam, my husband has an amazing ability to just "get on" and "get stuff done". When the day is over he has the capability to switch off and "shelf" what is on his mind in order to finish his working day, get a little "me" time and relax.  He motivates me to be work hard and play harder. He helps me to realise we can achieve all of our dreams...together!

Lastly but probably most importantly our four gorgeous children inspire me. They inspire me to be the best mummy I can. They fill me with the urge and the ability to be kind and gentle and energise me way more than I ever thought possible. They are the reason I jump out of bed each day, the last things on my mind as I go to sleep each night and they put the smiles in my every day - even when the chips are down. They are my inspiration to be the best "me" I possibly can!  Without them and their inspiration From The Oak Tree would still be a pipe dream...

I would love to here what inspires you? Is it a relationship or a dream or something quite different?

All the best and remember "wake up and smell the inspiration!!"

Oh, I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside!

School holidays always seem to come round all too quickly especially when you are a working mummy with four children, two business, 5 dogs and a large renovation project but this one really couldn't have come soon enough. After nearly a year of trading with From The Oak Tree we were well and truly ready to re-charge just in time for the (fingres crossed) festive rush ahead if us.

So, we headed south, to Devon.  We enjoyed a weekend with some really old friends   (not age just the length of time we have known them! :)) How times have changed; we used to spend much of our weekend with endless cheap beers, long lie-ins and very late nights. This weekend was spent enjoying good food and wine, trying out the range of tractors, diggers and amazing machines that was Digggerlnd and supporting the lovely Ells Bells running a half marathon. It was the best beginning to our break we could have wished for.   I can't imagine they would want us to recommend their gaff, just in case you all flocked to north Devon to "Chez Yeo" so instead of highly recommending them as hosts we definitely can't recommend Diggerland enough!!!

After a lovely lazy Monday morning walk and saying our goodbyes we set off on our leisurely drive to the South Hams in Devon, we found our way through many winding roads to Swallows Flight.  An incredible farm house with some old barns a converted barn, beautiful grounds a hot tub and a “Air Stream” caravan we would call home for the next few days. The sun shone and we set on our adventure with camping style living in the autumn sunshine, recharging our batteries and enjoy some good wholesome family fun.

We played rugger on the beach, enjoyed fish and chips by the sea, caught crabs, made sand castles, enjoyed leisurely soaks in the hot tub, family stories and fire pits.  Life back at home was a dream away and our engines were well and truly charging.

From The Oak Tree was left to its own devices for a week and I feel proud that we were able to let the online store do its own thing whilst we had our little family break. After all, we work to live don’t we?  Although, it feels good to be sat at my desk as I am generally very happy to live to work and play as I really do love my job!!!

In Reflection...

What a fabulous summer it is been- the first summer on the sales circuit and we have had a wonderful time.  We have mingled with the BBC at Country File, we've raleighed  with the cyclists at Erocia, we have walked the course with the Burghley Bunch and we are still smiling!!
From The Oak Tree has been well received and we have had so many wonderful comments about our products, our stands, our website and company ethos.
“The wine rack has arrived and I am totally in love with it. The engraving is so beautiful. Shame it's not for me!! Thank you a million times”
“I will be in touch again as I absolutely loved your display at Burghley and have already had ideas for Christmas presents and milestone presents”
“Thank you for the voucher that's really kind and it's been a pleasure purchasing something from you”
“No worries Charlotte X I love your chopping boards they are fab so big thank you xx”
“Hi Charlotte.  The bowl arrived this afternoon and I'm very pleased with it indeed. It's well sanded, smooth and has a beautiful chamfered edge on it. It's lovely.”
“Our fantastic boot rack and beautiful chopping board arrived on Friday and Saturday. They are amazing. Granny loved her chopping Board and our family were completely delighted with their boot rack and its in situ in the boot room at the Cottage!”
A season full of hard work and a lot of lessons learnt -new ideas on how to reduce set up times, different ways to display our oak wares, advice on new product lines. One lesson that I didn't need was that this business is all about the people - fun, serious, organised, excitable and the loveliest of people.
Without any of these people our shows would be nothing- so thank you to the people who brought, had good ideas, payed a compliment, helped organise, set up, visited our website, made constructive comments and those who have raved about us- we love you all!!

Badminton: A traders review

So we are back and nearly recovered from a full on few days at our first proper event! Two words: "LOVED IT! " It was everything we expected and more. We bossed our stall and were over the moon with its set up; our pitch on the corner was excellent.  The other stall holders were wonderful, a shout out to Em form Em and Lou (beautiful children nightware), who gave us so much advise and friendship.

Country living excelled them selves in accommodating us and with the communication. They made us feel so at home and not like complete novices! It would not obviously have been anything to write home about without the amazing customers- their kind words, their feedback and of course their purchasing skills....we loved everyone of you.

We met the most delightful dogs, small ones and big ones. Many who stopped in for a slurp of water whilst their owners enjoyed a sweet treat.  We had the best help with our wonderful friend Emma, who in wooed many of the dogs with her natural Dr Doolittle ways and in-turn sold many wooden gifts to their lovely owners. Many of our four legged friends manage to persuade their owners that a dog bowl would be the perfect gift for them, quite a few of their human friends obliged! Win win!

We had family visit, friends, some who we hadn't seen in 16 years- thank you to all of you who stopped by to say hi- you will never know how much we appreciated it.

Just in case you were wondering sam was right...the oak shot glass trays were a hit- they were so well sought after and we have had an influx of orders since arriving home too.

So we are looking forward to all future sales this year and will keep you fully updated on where we will be through our Facebook page.

Have a good day y'all!

Badminton...it's a Country Living Life!

Pony Club, Hampshire circa 1992. Coach trip to Badminton Horse trials.  A jam packed day out, walking the course, being in awe of the speed and the heights the riders and their horses could achieve and claiming that one day I would be there....( I said the same thing when I visited the Metropolitan Mounted Police on a similar trip!!).

So this year, 2016, I will finally be returning...still not on horse back, however, but on my bike, peddling our little oak wares.  I am so excited that I could burst!!  Not quite being on board a 17:2 handsome gelding but I am most certainly proud of what my stallion has achieved...(I know, I know, pass the sick bucket, pun intended!!)

Since starting Trading in November 2015,  after trading online and building up an online presence we have been asked to attend a variety of Country Living events.  We have worked hard to create a feel that they approve of and are excited that we will be one of the chosen exhibitors this year in the Country Living Tent at Badminton Horse Trials.  The Tent is pitched just off Beaufort Way, next to the Bank and adjacent to the Mark Todd Big Screen and our trade Stand 43 is the first exhibit on left of the left hand entrance.

Please, please come and say hi- a friendly face will most certainly get us over the first hurdle and will be just what we need during, what is likely to be, a fun filled, tiring and hopefully busy week.

A perfect gift to Say Thankyou!

A special Gift to Say thank you...many of our gifts would be a perfect thank you but we were asked to make a personalised shot glass tray for a host in The Alps...Perfect Apres Ski, don't you agree?

My Name Is Charlotte and I am a Bridgewaterholic

There I said it.  It's out now. For those of you that don't know me I have a slight obsession with Emma Bridgewater pottery!  It started in 2004 when Sam and I spent the afternoon with a zapper in John Lewis choosing things to go on our wedding list.  We fell love with the polka dot design and decided to pop some lovely pieces on our list...and when we tied the knot in the December we were lucky enough to receive some of these pieces....I can still tell you who gifted what and each piece is as beautiful and as special as the next one.

I started mixing and matching, once I read Emma's story about loving an eclectic mix of designs around her own table. We now own of a vast variety of colourful pinks, rose and bee, blue stars, red stars, joy, dogs, dancing mice an the list goes on.  I can't help but follow the links when she kindly emails me to tell me whats for sale, what's new and what has been especially picked for me ( or so I believe).  Sometimes I fill my basket with so many gorgeous pieces it would be rude not to press go!

Emma Bridgewater and From The Oak Tree

Ive been known to hide the boxes but Sam on the whole is pretty easy going  and often receives beautiful pottery for fathers days, christmas,  valentines day  and his birthday, poor Thing!! Perhaps one day From The Oak Tree will have a following off wonderfully obsessive people who are desperate to fill their own houses with our wooden charms!!

You'll see Emma B features in a lot of our pictures which is why I felt the need to introduce our own piece to accomodate the pottery its self.  Our Nuts and Nibbles bowls fit the fluted bowls in perfectly but does also look fabulous without them!!

Please do take around our site and let us know if you can think of any other pieces that would complement my favourite pottery brand too!!!

Mum, I LOVE YOU!

Sunday 6th March 2016 will mark mothers day this year.  Im not one to give in to what my husband calls "Americanism's" but I do love to show my own Mum how much I love her and appreciate everything she has done and does for me and my 'mini me's.'  I would be lying if I said I didn't like it when my own children, with the help of my darling husband, show me that they love me and think about me too!
A personalised gift is for sure a fabulous way to show your mum or your wife / partner   (from your children ) how much she means to you and how fabulous she really is. All of our products at From the Oak Tree can be personalised and made with your Mum/ Mummy / Mother in mind. Use the inscription to tell her how much you love her and be as creative as you like!!!

Personally I would like to be on the receiving end of the following products- engraved with something especially from my children, engraved and unique to us;  breadboard a keeping tidy rack , a bits & bobs bowl and the egg rack, but what would you or your own Mum like??

"BespOAK" Chopping Boards

Not only do we offer our very own range of chopping boards we even offer a bespoke service too.  Made to measure oak boards, to meet the customers very own needs and requirements.  Just give me a call or drop me an email and we will be delighted to discuss your bespoke requirements.  You never know we may like your design so much that before you know it your wooden chopping board is featured on our website and online shop!!!

Extra Large Nibbles Board

This fabulously large nibbles platter, perfect as a centre piece on any kitchen table or perhaps as a platter for a buffet.  This board gave the customer a large area for personalised inscription; "Good Food ~ Good Friends  ~ Good Time."

It certainly looked fabulous and the review indicates it was well received: "Thank you so much to Sam, Charlotte and the team for creating my bespoke order - the recipients L O V E D it! I think their jaws actually dropped!"

Really Really Big Board with lip and Side Engraving

This really really big chopping board was turned around and was engraved along the sides.  This board was being made, as a gift from husband to wife, as a house warming gift and will be used everyday to save the worktops.  A lip was added to enable easy cleaning and to ensure the board states in place, it is still however easy to move around the kitchen.  This board was all about the inscription, after careful thought: “Hands built this house…Walker’s hearts made it home" was engraved and I am sure you will agree it is a perfect addition to this truly beautiful family home!

If you would like to discuss your own bespoak requirements please do give me a call on 01664 650075 or email me at enquiries@fromtheoaktree.co.uk.

/Users/Charlotte/Documents/Claudia From The Oak Tree.movEveryday like many millions of people I check my emails several times.  I trail through endless junk mails, newsletters from online stores that tempt me, work emails and my favourite ones from friends and family ( actually I'm slightly partial to the ones from From The Oak Tree telling me I have a sale too!! )  However the one's that make me smile the most are the ones from Claudie ( our daughter!)

Ok, so we gave in to her and her need ( her words not ours)  for an iPad and helped her on her 9th birthday, along with other generous family and friends to get her very own iPad mini.  Its been worth it's weight in gold already; helping her for homework, freeing up our devices that we need for work, keeping her in the know with current music, and of course the usual entertainment through apps and well monitored you tube! No need to panic though, Claudia also loves to play, I mean really play with REAL toys.  She has a vivid imagination and still, at 9, loves to role play with her babies and siblings.  She also is very creative and loves all things art, recently teaching herself to knit.

Anyway...back to emails.  Claudia had been at home all day today feeling rotten, the type of ill that requires you to do a lot of nothing but bed is a step too far ( soft mummy I hear you cry). When I sat at my desk this afternoon, my emails started to ping through and one name appeared that made me smile. Claudia. I sifted through all the other emails, binning them, saving them and responding and saved this little gem to last.  In fact who really knew it was a little gem- she uses email to communicate her many manner of moods to me; I receive emoticons (happy, sad, weird and wonderful), photos (memories and ones Id rather forget.  The Looser sign springs to mind) , I get told how wonderful I am as a mummy ( honestly) and also how terrible I am as a mummy ( honestly!).  Sometimes all of these are recieved within minutes!!

So this email was still sitting, waiting.  It was a movie- just for me, just for us! A trailer in fact. Showing her whole family and From the Oak Tree; telling us a story, I suppose, of how our new venture fits in with family life, through the eyes of a "tweeny" (thats somewhere between 8-12!!). Impressed! Proud! What a fab interpretation of our reasons!!!

Wood You Be My Valentine???

We have just launched our brand new, valentines oak gifts and chopping boards and are getting a lot of traffic to the site which is simply amazing...Thankyou! It got me thinking why do we actually celebrate valentines and where did it start? So I did a little research....

Valentines Day

For those of you who don't know, Valentines day is the 14th February, everyyear and is a day when people traditionally show affection towards another person. By buying cards, gifts (oak gifts!) flowers and chocolates with messages of love.

St Valentine

Most people know that the name comes from the famous saintbut there are several schools of thought on who he was.  The most popular belief is that St Valentine was a priest from Rome in 3rd century AD. In those days the Emperor Claudius II had put a stop to marriage as he decided married men didn't make great soldiers, St Valentine thought this to be unfair and arranged secret marriages.  Once the Emperor found out he through St Valentine into jail and was sentenced to death.  Whilst in prison he fell in love with the jailers daughter and when he was taken to be killed on 14th February he sent her a love letter signed "From Your Valentine".

How did Valentines Day Start?

It is a very old tradition thought to have originated from the Romans.  They had a festival in February and it is thought that as pat of the celebrations, boys and girls drew names out of box.  they would then remain together for the festival and sometimes they would get married.

The church wanted to turn this into a christian celebration and decided to use it to remember St Valentine too. Hence why people started to use his name to express their feelings to their loved ones.

Please take a look at From the Oak Tree's Valentines collection for a range of inspiring oak gifts and products that can be personalised with intimate messages, pet names or simply inspirational words.  How ever you celebrate one another we can help!!

Our Oak Swing in the Lime Light!

A new year and a brand new company showing off its oak wares in the local lifestyle magazine!  From The Oak Tree was lucky enough to be featured this month in the Rutland Living and Market Harborough magazines, within the editors choice section.  We were delighted that Abigail Richardson, the Editor of both magazines liked our products so much she wanted to feature them.  She choose the Oak swing, with our daughters Claudia and Beatrix, looking angelic ( really they are not!!)

The photograph has become one of our well used, signature images and certainly encourages alot of comments; you may remember it being pictured on our signage at Irnham Winter Fair.  The picture provokes such happy memories of a family day and a photographer, on set in our garden, fooling about with our wooden delights.  The swing had the desired effect that it should bring to every child: happiness, a bellyfull of laughs, playfulness, fresh air and exercise!!

No wonder the blurb in the Leicestershire and Rutland magazines read: "Tempt them into the garden with this gorgeous personalised swing from local company From The Oak Tree".   What child wouldn't fancy swinging away the winter cobwebs on a wonderfully natural, Oak swing?

A perfect way to get the children out and about in the garden enjoying themselves in the fresh air.  Why not "aim high" or "reach for the stars" on your own personalised, hand made oak swing.

Today is happy day!

Today is a good day!  We have been eating clean for the last two weeks, lost some of the excess christmas podge already and my skin is feeling good.  I'm getting up early for a little me time every day, time for exercise, a chance to plan the day and sort the house before I have to drag four little 'grumpy mumpy's' of bed ( Here at the Willows' we are definitely NOT morning people!)
The children are on pretty good form, by limiting their sugar, in turn their behaviour has improved!  They are happy to help each other, they are desperate to play each others games and keen to talk about their days happenings. Happy children = Happy parents = Happy house!!!
What else is making me happy?  Well the house is clean and tidy, I'm not slaving away but things are generally in their places and we are all trying hard to clean up after ourselves.  The building work is coming along ( poor Sam, he does that whilst he is supposed to be sleeping!) The main business, Hortus Ligneous is ticking along nicely and all the staff seem happy too.  Products From the oak tree are being well received and we have positive comments daily about our oak gifts...who wouldn't be happy with that!!
Whilst pondering over my happy, positive feeling today I realise how incredibly lucky we are with our friends and family.  You can't choose family, but I would pick ours any-day and I think we have been extremly lucky to have picked up our friends along the way!! The oldest friends are like fine wine, they just get better with age. Time spent with them may be more sparse these days but the memories serve us for such a long time.  Even our university pals are becoming a little vintage and minutes spent together is better than therapy!!
Then there are the local mates, made through having young children and work. Although the friendships are hot off the press, we all have so much in common and are lucky enough to spend special times and some of the most precious moments of our lives with them as and when they are happening.
Our friends are awesome, too many to name.  Each, individual. Similar to snowflakes; all different and all beautiful, and we are just grateful that our paths have crossed.

What were our most popular personalised oak gifts?

So it's a Happy new year from him and a happy new year from me, to all of the friends of From The Oak Tree.  We thank you for all your support over the last few months as our little acorn of a business started on its journey to bring you hand crafted Oak gifts, From The Oak Tree. We had a fabulous festive season introducing to you our oak product ranges and collections.

We found our oak Mince Pie and Dear Santa small oak boards popular as gifts to families and children and we were delighted to hear that Father Christmas loved the contents left on the personalised oak boards...showing his thanks and appreciation with sacks of gifts for many children.

The biggest most popular selling gift in the lead up to Christmas were our oak swings:specifically personalised with children's names, house names or simply with moto's such as: 'aim high' and reach for the stars.  All of our oak swings come with 6m rope but you can order extra rope should you need to, please contact us to create a more bespoke order.  Hopefully many children ( and adults)  are now swinging their way through our great British winter!

Gifts for men were made easier this year by From The Oak Tree. Our oak device chargers were a big hit with women buying for their husbands and partners and children buying gifts for their Dads. Many of these oak gifts were engraved with catch phrases suited to that individual person, cheeky slogans and mottos..."DAD iN CHARGE" was a good one but the oat popular was off the shelf 'iPad'   ( single oak charging unit) which surely made him feel good on Christmas Day when he received his very own charging unit!!

We have already had a couple of lovely reviews about our gifts saying how they brought so much pleasure to those who received them offering many years of joy we hope!  We look forward to helping many more lovely people find that unique and special personalised oak gift in 2016!

" Those gifts are ever more precious which the giver has made precious! "

How To Look After Your Oak Chopping Board.

Once you have your beautiful, solid oak, personalised, engraved chopping board in your arms how should you look after it...I hear you ask?!  Here at From The Oak Tree we use mineral oil to treat our oak chopping boards as it is naturally nut free and food safe and it is also kind to our bodies too.  You can purchase mineral oil for the majority of hardware stores and many chemists too and it will keep your hands even softer than your oak board.

There is an old saying about the how often you should treat your board:   "Oil it once a day for a week, once a week for a month, once a month for a year and once a year, there after..."

Basically, the more you oil your oak chopping board the longer it will look new and will handle food products.  A solid Oak board will of course be around for many generations; it will probably out live you and your grandchildren but through regular treatment and care your board will look more pristine and aesthetically pleasing.  Oiling your board will also help the oak board to keep naturally clean and help it to steer clear of picking up odours from a variety of foods.  As the oak chopping board is a natural product, it is likely to stain, depending on the foods that are put on it.  A light sand and coating of oil can improve its appearance and get it looking as good as new!!

Enjoy your Oak Chopping board and give it the care it deserves, after all it will be around to serve you for many many years to come!

From the Oak Tree sells a variety of sizes in hand made Oak chopping boards but we are happy to discuss your own individual requires should you wish a bespoke board to be made.  All products can be personalised and engraved with your own words and inscription.
